A Simple Guide to Wearing Trendy Office Styles
One of the main reasons we started Corporate in Color was to share trendy office styles that are more accessible AND work appropriate. At first, it can be daunting to start branching out but with these tips, you’ll be the best dressed in no time!
Now, companies are much more relaxed and casual with their dress codes. I began branching out and wearing more “trendy” office styles to work and stepping my style game up drastically. Bringing trends into the work place can be a bit of a daunting task. Always wondering if HR is waiting on the side to tell you to change. BUT, with these tips, you’ll be able to show off your style in no time.
I love wearing a fun trend to work. Culottes when they first came out, fun sleeves, crop tops (yes I did), and of course leather. Some people prefer to err of the side of caution but my workplace was filled with ripped jeans, sneakers, and flip-flops, so I wasn’t too concerned trying something new.
Often I get asked “How can I wear this work?” or “Sydney, I have this *super trendy piece*. How can I style it for the office?” Well, look no further as I’m giving you the keys to wearing trendy office styles.
Some trends won’t make the cut, and that’s okay!
First, I must admit, there are some trends that work for the office, and others that just don’t. When deciding a trend to try out, make sure it’s still in line with your company’s dress code. Ripped jeans might be a trend but they are NEVER appropriate for work. Like ever. Choose something that’s already pre-approved like a different pant style, or a fun print. Steer clear of anything showing too much skin. In some cases, it just may not work, and that’s okay! On to the next! (P.S. Ripped jeans and flip flops are NOs for the office, but I’ve seen it)
Say it with me, B A L A N C E.
Second, the real key is B A L A N C E. Most work spaces are still fairly conservative. Unless you work for a tech or in the creative industry, many folks will play it safe when it comes to their wardrobe. So at first, ease into things and give one trend a go. Keep the rest of your outfit simple.
Wearing a bold blazer? Pair it with simple jeans or a monochromatic pant and blouse combo. Leather pants, opt for neutral colored sweater or blouse and a simple pump or a classic “business” pattern blazer like houndstooth. In this look, I’m a bit more comfortable with my office style so I went for a blazer in the same color scheme, a white sweater, and a sleek pump.
Remember, the goal here, especially if your office isn’t expecting it, is to work your way up to the more vibrant trends. When I was starting out, I would wear bright pants and neutral tops. Then, when I was able to have more fun, and felt more comfortable doing so, I started trying different color combos and pattern mixes. Once you get used to it, and your office gets used to you dressing up, you will stand out in a good way!
