Six Pieces You Need in Your Capsule Wardrobe
You asked and we’re answering! If you want to create a capsule wardrobe that stands the test of time, these are the pieces you’ll need.
One question we get asked a lot is “how do I build a capsule wardrobe”? It’s easier to do than you may think, and only requires a few simple pieces. You can build around your capsule wardrobe as you see fit, but these are the pieces you need at the core. They are timeless and help you create a ton of great outfits. As long as you have these pieces, you’ll always have something to wear.
Neutral Blazers
Of course I had to put blazers at the top of the list. They’re my all-time favorite piece and you can wear them for any occasion. Blazers easily elevate streetwear and complete any office look. Start with neutral colors like black, white, navy, and gray because they go with everything.
Good Jeans
Everyone needs a good pair of jeans (or two) that make them look and feel confident. You may have to try on a few different styles and brands to find what best suits you, but it will be well worth it. High-waisted skinny and straight leg jeans are my favorite. They have classic cuts that offer a ton of versatility. As you’re building your capsule wardrobe, focus on jeans that plain, no distressing or funky cuts necessary.
Basic tops and blouses
Tops and blouses already have a lot to offer your capsule wardrobe. There are a lot of styles to choose from that are still understated and pair well with just about anything. My favorite styles for a capsule wardrobe are shell tops, button-front shirts, and turtlenecks. Once again, you want to go for simple cuts that you can easily swap in and out of any outfit. Tank tops and camisoles are also a must because they’re great for layering.
Classic shoes
Whether you prefer heels or flats, you need some classic and comfortable shoes in your capsule wardrobe. If you’re going for heels, I recommend a max heel height of 3 inches. Any higher and they likely won’t be comfortable to walk in, especially at work. For flats, opt for smart styles like loafers, oxfords, or a simple flat.
Sheath dresses
Sheath dresses are my favorite style of dress because they usually work well for any body type. Sheath dresses are great for the office and you can layer them with your blazers and blouses. You’ll definitely get a ton of wear out of them in every season so they’re a must-have in my book.
Quality trousers
I have to round off this list with trousers. Like jeans, they come in various styles and cuts to suit different body type. Slim fits are my personal favorite because they look really smart and tailored. Trousers will be great for work outfits no matter what kind of office you work in. You can pair them with a blazer and blouse for a super polished look or nix the blazer for a look that’s more relaxed.
And there you have it folks, the building blocks for a great capsule wardrobe. Of course you can add more to your wardrobe like skirts, jackets, bolder colors, prints, etc. but take your time with it. You’ll be surprised with how many looks you can create with a wardrobe that’s simple and features pieces you can wear for work or weekend.
