The Anti-Suit: A Dress and Blazer for Office Style
Dressing professionally doesn’t always mean you have to wear a suit. Here’s how we create a chic and professional look with no suit needed.
Hello lovelies! Today’s post is for you guys because you all voted for a style post over on our Insta stories. *Shameless plug* if you don’t follow us on instagram, we won’t judge you but now is the time to click follow! Okay, getting back to the conversation at hand now. If you know us you know how often we preach maximizing your wardrobe and creating new outfits with pieces you already own. Well, my favorite way to do this for work is what I’ve deemed the “anti-suit”.
Dress: DVF (via Rent the Runway) similar here & here | Blazer: H & M (similar) | Shoes: Nine West (similar)
The anti-suit is simply a sheath dress paired with a blazer. It’s one of the easiest ways to mix and match pieces in your wardrobe to make multiple outfits. You can create four different looks with one blazer and three dresses easily! I highly recommend the anti-suit for anyone who is building their professional wardrobe, new to the workforce, or interning. I name these particular groups because when you’re just starting out you don’t need to focus on buying a ton of clothes right away. Having a few key pieces is enough to sustain you in the beginning.
A sheath dress and blazer are a feminine yet still professional pair if done right. I always recommend a dress that’s made of a thicker material so it’s not easy to see through and structured. This DVF dress is one of my current RTR rentals and the material almost reminds me of denim with the thickness and feel. Calvin Klein is another go-to brand of mine for good quality dresses. You can usually find under $60 at TJMAXX or Ross. Your blazer should fit you well without being too tight. This means you should be able to button your blazer while wearing a dress or shirt underneath without the button(s) looking stressed.
You can add your own personal style to your looks like I did. Since I had a lot of black and white going on with this look, I decided to break it up with a bold green belt from ASOS. I think I’ve mentioned this before but belts are my new favorite accessory to pull looks together. If you haven’t tried it out for yourself, please do so ASAP.
A sheath dress and blazer are also a good combo to take you from day to night. we’re entering rooftop season in Chicago and I know plenty of your professionals will be taking advantage of happy hour specials right after work. With this look, you’re professional and put together during the day, and after work you can take off the blazer to be a little more relaxed.
There are so many ways to make the “anti-suit” work for you i just about any professional setting. How do you feel about wearing a dress with a blazer instead of a traditional suit? Leave a comment to join the conversation!
Until next time,
