The Layering Piece You Didn't Know You Needed
In most corporate offices, your look isn’t complete without a third layer. Whether that’s a blazer or a sweater over a collared shirt, that final piece polishes off the look. While blazers are a natural go-to, I’m challenging you to learn a new wardrobe staple that will be sure to make you stand out in your next big meeting.
Gilet is the technical term but you can call it a duster or just a long vest. Classified as a light, sleeveless padded jacket will get you Banker Bro vibes, but there are much chic-er options out there like this one. I’m sporting one from Alfani and just snagged this one from Macy’s on sale.
Why you need it?
A gilet is a great option if you get too hot in blazers and want more arm movement. Blazers, especially in the winter and under your coat, can get pretty tight. At the perfect calf length, it add some drama while walking down the hallway as well.
Grab yourself one that has some weight to keep you warm. In the cooler months, we want heavy fabrics that are still breathable especially if you’re commuting. The dark grey color is a great neutral for offices that are on the business professional side. If you have a more business casual or smart casual career, don’t be afraid of grabbing one with more color.
How to wear it?
This time around, I opted for a straight leg maroon pant from J. Crew Factory and a pleated sleeve blouse from Ann Taylor. If you ever find yourself bored with the usual white blouse, go for an option with embellishment or sleeve detail for some interest. I went for a pleated cuff which normally wouldn’t be seen in a long sleeve blazer so this is a great way to pull in more detail. Personally, I like wearing them with a sweater underneath that has a large sleeve. Also, don’t be shy to wear it with a dress and sport a belt over both layers.
Do you have one of these in your closet yet?
