We’re slowly creeping into spring and y’all know that when it starts getting warm outside I start trading my slacks in for dresses and skirts. A woman’s work wardrobe is truly so versatile! Once you get the blueprint for a few standard looks down, you can start making them your own by adding fun pieces!

As you all may recall, I’m a super fan of the classic work dress and blazer look. There are so many ways you can wear this look without it getting boring; textures, prints and colors are just a few ways to make this classic look pop. Today I’m putting a twist on the old faithful with a very interesting black and white, multi patterned dress.

First things first, this dress was a MAJOR steal! It was regularly priced at $49.90 and I got it on sale for $10 at H & M. TEN DOLLARS for a $50 dress! That’s a deal you just can’t refuse. From a distance this dress looks like a simple houdstooth pattern but when you take a second look you can tell it’s more unique.

As you can see, the fabric of this dress is composed of different patterns meshed together. I must admit when I first saw it I had very mixed feelings about it. Part of me loved the shape and structure of this dress for work and part of me was unsure about the pattern. Truth be told the price sold me. I knew that if I got this dress for only $10 I could make it work for me! Sometimes we have to take risks with the pieces we choose to buy. This is especially true if you’re drawn to a piece for some odd reason, that’s usually a sign that you’re meant to have it!

Although the patterns are a bit busy, I knew the fact that this dress is black and white would be a saving grace for me. This dress has an optical illusion feel to it so you don’t realize how busy it is at first. Of course, my first instinct was to throw my oh-so-necessary black blazer over it to create a business professional look. If I wanted I could have put a blouse underneath depending on how I wanted to layer. Options are key when you’re creating looks for work. You don’t want to buy something that you can only wear one way or with one other specific piece.

Y’all know I had to bring my favorite black pumps out to play! If you wanted to go more bold you could do a red pump instead. I like that this dress is figure flattering in a modest way. It creates a nice feminine waistline for girls like me who don’t have hips lol! Since this dress does have a “skinny” waistline I decided to go up two sizes from my regular size. I’ve made the mistake of buying a dress that has a smaller waist in my regular size and I had major regrets. Since my natural waistline isn’t super slender buying a dress with a small waist was difficult to zip and didn’t leave much room for breathing. We learn from our mistakes! If you were blessed with a slender waistline you could probably go for a dress like this in your size instead of going a size up but I’d still urge you to try it on first just in case.

I went for simple stud earrings and a pearl necklace for business professional continuity. This is such an easy business professional look to put together you could almost do it with your eyes closed! Always keep your eyes peeled when going through the clearance sections of your favorite stores because you WILL find some gems there!
