Five Takeaways You Need to Know About the #EmpowerHer17 Conference

This past weekend we had the opportunity to attend the EmpowerHer 2017 Conference right here in Chicago! See some of our favorite takeaways from the event that have us approaching the week head on!

Good Morning Loves! I have a confession…I HATE Mondays. Like despise them, especially in the Summer! I’m sure many of us can agree that the weekends are too short and the week is way too long but for us working gals, that’s just how it is! This past weekend though, we had the awesome opportunity to attend the 2017 EmpowerHer Conference here in Chicago, and I already have a new outlook on life!

Earlier last week, a representative from Ford reached out and invited us to the EmpowerHer 2017 Conference by Blavity and 21 Ninety so we could gather as young women and connect about entrepreneurship, personal growth and goal setting. We met up with some of our favorite bloggers and brands like Travel Noire, Boss Babes,  and BlackGirlFy Mag just to name a few. Along with that, we got words of wisdom by Lena Waithe from Master of None and Producer of Dear White People and Danielle Leslie of DanielleLeslie.com

If you didn’t get the chance to attend, we’re here to leave you with Five Takeaways from the conference to start implementing into your own life!

1. Self Care

As women and more particularly black women we normally take care of everyone else but ourselves. Whether it’s work, families, or just trying to get anything and everything done, we’re normally the last thing on the list. Each and every panelist we listened to stressed the importance of taking time out for yourself. And by time, I don’t mean every six months take a spa day. Each day whether it’s 15 minutes or 2 hours, take the time to calibrate yourself with the world and center yourself for your day. Drink tea. Commit to a yoga class. Read some positive messages. Do something that YOU want to do that makes you happy.

2. Find Your Tribe

Maya and I have been friends for about 6 years with the blog taking up at least half of that time and I’m so happy that we’re in this together! It’s so important for you to find someone that supports you and your mission whether it be personal or professional. Throughout your life you’ll face different obstacles but knowing that you have at least one or more persons surrounding you with love, guidance, and positive vibes, you’ll more than likely overcome it!

3. Know Your Worth

One of our favorite speakers from the conference was Alex Wolfe, the creator of Boss Babes and she left us with a plethora of gems to take home. Wolfe started her business around consulting Other millennial women to take control of their lives and hone in on their passions. Our favorite takeaway from her was the importance of knowing your worth! So many times, we sell ourselves short whether it’s lowering the price of our products and services or not negotiating for a higher raise come review time knowing you have the chips to back it up.  Don’t be afraid to ask for what you want and the price that comes with it!

4. Fail Fast

This will be a hard pill to swallow for some but it’s a need to know. Fail fast. And by fast I mean like right now. Stop preparing and waiting until the stars align and everything is perfect. Launch that website, go for that promotion, send out that e-book *cough coming soon #promise*! The reality behind this is that the longer you wait for the perfect moment, the less motivated you’ll become and the project could fall to the wayside. Or better yet, you’ll even talk yourself out of doing it in it’s entirety! So, bite the bullet, eat the frog, whatever you want to call it, get it handled!

5. Strategy is NOTHING without Execution

Our last and final takeaway is a big one and goes hand in hand with the previous note, action is nothing without execution! We plan, strategize, write lists, and have meetings all the time but what good are those if they don’t have any action behind them? I admit I’m a planner. A HUGE planner. I have notes, spreadsheets, and e-mail threads of all these ideas then only follow through about 50% of the time. Use that awesome tribe you have to hold you accountable and set a deadline. As entrepreneurs, we really don’t have anyone to answer to except ourselves so we might need a little help to keep us in check.

Leaving the conference, I felt not only motivated but everything seemed so much clearer! After listening to various panels about finding and creating success, owning it 100% of the time, and committing to becoming a better you I’m approaching this week with a whole new outlook!
