How to Style an Oversized Blazer for Work
Are you loving the oversized blazer trend but wondering how to take it from street style to corporate style? We have the style tips you need to pull it off!
It’s no secret that I love blazers. I recently shared that they’re my favorite piece of clothing ever on our Instagram page AND I did a whole post devoted to the best fall blazer styles (click here for that post). Oversized blazers never seem to go out of style and you see everyone from your favorite celebs to fashionable women in Downtown Chicago wearing them. If you want to style your oversize blazer for work and still look polished, here are my tips.
Wear your blazer belted
Belts over blazers has become my new thing. Oversized blazers especially look good belted as a nice belt gives it a shape and structure. I styled this bold orange blazer with a classic black belt to play down the size and cut so I’m not drowning in it.
Style your blazer with fitted bottoms
We’ve discussed our rule about the volume-trade off before. If you’re going big with volume up top, you should wear fitted bottoms and vice versa. That rule applies here because the cut of oversized blazers creates more volume, no matter how you style it. I paired mine with a pair of faux suede pants from Old Navy. If you haven’t tried these pants, you absolutely have to! They’re a favorite of mine for fall and winter. Easy to wear and super warm!
Utilize your capsule wardrobe to create a base
In our essential work wear style guide (get your copy here) we talk about building a capsule wardrobe and how important it is. If you aren’t sure what direction to go in when styling your oversized blazer, simply refer back to that capsule wardrobe. Take your basic white blouse, a good pair of trousers and finish it off with your blazer. You can never go wrong with the basics! The blazer will act as a point of interest, so start simple and build up.
